Matilda Bethelford

Matilda Bethelford is a metalsmith and multi-disciplinary mixed media artist, she studied Applied Arts at Wrexham University.

Inspired by the way that human experience reflects the universe, she translates the complicated world into patterns, forms and compositions. Matilda creates something every day, with each concept evolving through a life cycle of mediums until it reaches its final destination – metal.

“Metal is such a poetic end to these concepts – I find that it is the most beautiful material to work with, especially when working from such intangible and abstract ideas. For example, black holes. The idea that all of that Something is going into all of that Nothingness – the feeling of falling, of being very little and lost in the big shop-helplessness and the unknown. Metal to me is the antithesis of this – it is hard, it is so real and it has such deep roots in our human history, in our world. And I get to work with it – I get to work with this
genius material to make tangible objects from ideas and feelings that we cannot touch.”

Recently, Matilda has been developing an inlaying technique which allows her to create a painterly effect in metal. With aspirations to eventually teach, she is currently working to build her traditional silversmithing skills and strengthen her artistic language across mediums.
