Annie Higgins

Annie is an Artist Metalsmith exploring the fragmented body.

Inspired by reliquaries, which hold flesh in a state of metaphoric and metamorphic flux, she is seeking ways of knowing the body in its vital, visceral substance.

Annie’s work acts on the compulsion to reform the body and see it reflected outside the self, placed back into the landscape and its own hands. She is chasing those moments of sensing and interaction and finds parallels with the squishy responsiveness of metal as it both gives and resists under pressure.

Flesh and metal are at their most vital in moments of traversal and interaction, where they sit at the precipice of a change in state, enter into the touch of a witness or are subsumed by the landscape.

In her practice, Annie takes the figure apart and reassembles it over and over through a cyclical process of drawing and making, in an attempt to capture an instant of transitional potential. Working with the body in pieces divorces it temporarily from personal or social definition, makes its edges porous and allows it to absorb bodies and meanings from its surroundings. It has a blurriness that keeps it in motion even it settles into the static state of an object.
